These two offices will be the best resource for you; however, your local Election Board can provide you with the appropriate petitions, if required to file for the position you are seeking.
STATE OFFICESIf you are running for statewide office like Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, etc. or running for the Indiana House of Representatives or Indiana State Senate, you will want to visit the web site of the Indiana Election Division or contact their office at (317) 232-3939 as campaign finance reports and many candidate filing documents are filed with their office. However, your local Election Board can provide you with the appropriate petitions, if required to file for the position you are seeking.
JUDICIAL OFFICESJudicial candidates have special rules outlined by the Indiana Supreme Court as well as those by Indiana state law. Their filing process is unique to the position, as they file their candidacy with the Indiana Election Division but file campaign finance reports with their local Election Board. LOCAL OFFICESThe Marion County Election Board has resources for candidates running for county-wide, township and other local offices like City-County Council. Candidates running as a major party candidate (Democrat or Republican) are encouraged to contact their local political party first to learn of any party rules that may impact. If you are seeking nomination from one of the major political parties, then you’ll likely be part of the state’s primary election held in May. These candidates appear on November’s general election ballot along with third party, minor party and write-in candidates. Additionally, some statewide candidates like Secretary of State and Auditor are appointed at each state party's convention in the summer and then appear on the general election ballot in the fall. Nearly every candidate (there are a few exclusions as noted in the resource packets) is required to open a campaign finance committee and file the appropriate documents on or before the deadlines outlined in state law.

School Board candidates follow a different process to run for office. The do not run in a primary election as their offices are considered non-partisan. These offices appear on the ballot in November’s general election. Candidates also file petitions with their local Election Board in order for their name to appear on the ballot. Before downloading the resource packet below, candidates are encouraged to contact their local school corporation to understand their residency and other office requirements adopted by their School Board as required by state law.
